Congressional Update from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce

Dec 21, 2015 - by Buy Nearby

Chamber Friends,

What a difference a year, a pro-business Senate Majority, a shakeup in House Leadership (with former-Speaker John Boehner “clearing the barn” and allowing Speaker Paul Ryan to hit the ground running), and a President willing to deal make. In the wake of TPA, a permanent “doc fix”, a long-term transportation bill, permit streamlining and Ex-Im Reauthorization, Congress is not done putting Ws on the board when and where they can.

Prior to hitting the road for 2015, Congress also aced another core assignment: reauthorizing the Federal role in K-12 education by passing the Every Student Succeeds Act, which was subsequently signed into law by the President.

Congress alsopassed its latest compromise. While imperfect, the omnibus appropriations and tax extenders legislation seals a cartload of important business victories and averts a government shutdown.

Still, much more work is ahead of us. This is especially true on regulatory reform issues to stem the most onerous and least transparent overreach of Washington’s burgeoning bureaucracy, such as the “sue and settle” process.  Much more on this (plus, how you can help!) and the most recent goings on in Congress below.

Thanks so much for all of your work in 2015; you really made a difference in DC.  Happy Holidays and we look forward to teaming up again in the New Year.
