Vote for Proposition A
By a unanimous vote of the Harris County Commissioners Court, a measure will be placed on the November 5th election ballot, which if passed by the voters, will add an additional $100 million dollars to the Harris County Flood Control District’s maintenance program bringing the total annual amount the district has available for ongoing maintenance and flood risk reduction infrastructure to $241 million. Over the past 25 years, the acreage the Flood Control District owns and maintains has more than doubled. Yet, funding during this time has remained relatively flat.
With the incredible support the County voters demonstrated in the 2018 flood bond referendum and the measured improvements the Flood Control District has subsequently made to its 2,500 miles of channels, it would be a great disservice to everyone if the District were to allow those channels to fall back into disrepair for a lack of means to keep them operational. The channel improvement needs along Cypress Creek are extensive, and any amount of resources added to mitigating the flood risk on the Cypress Creek watershed is move in the right direction.
If approved, Proposition A will increase the Flood Control District’s dedicate ad valorem tax rate by 1.581 cents per $100 of value. That is an additional $47.43 of property taxes on a home valued at $300,000.
The Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce supports Proposition A and encourages you to vote for this measure. Moreover, the Chamber has a made contribution to the Cypress Creek Drainage Improvement District (CCDID). This donation will go toward the development of the District’s Watershed Resiliency Plan. The CCDID is our community’s best resource for developing more local control over Cypress Creek’s flood mitigation efforts and encourages you to support them as well.
